Sabut Moong Dal (Whole Green Moong Dal)


  • 1 cup whole green moong beans
  • 3 cups water
  • 1 medium tomato, chopped
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1/2 tsp coriander powder
  • 1 tsp turmeric powder
  • A pinch of asafoetida powder
  • 3-4 cloves of garlic, chopped
  • 1” piece of ginger, chopped
  • 2 dry red chillies, broken
  • 2 tbsp oil
  • Salt to taste
  • 1 tsp lime juice
  • Chopped coriander leaves for garnish

Method –

  1. Wash and soak the moong beans overnight
  2. Drain the water and pressure cook the beans with 3 cups of water and salt for 1 whistle
  3. Add 1 tbsp oil in a pan
  4. Add asafoetida powder, dry red chillies and cumin seeds
  5. Once the seeds crackle, add ginger and garlic
  6. After about 30 seconds, add onions and fry till light brown
  7. Add tomato, turmeric powder and coriander powder and cook till tomato becomes soft
  8. Add the dal to this mixture and boil for 2 minutes
  9. Garnish with chopped coriander leaves and sprinkle the lime juice
